A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GOD OF THE SIMULATION.
A brief history of the God of the simulation
is the human story
of casting upward our highest ideals,
one intellectual age at a time,
and then trying to live up to them.
Our conception of God
comes from an internal evolution
which needs and needs to surpass
a divine parent.
What will make you believe in God
is tragedy and wonder.
Tragedy because
your psyche simply cannot bear up
under the cold rejection of nature;
you need a deep sense of belonging
in the midst of chaos and reckless
hunting and eating of the weak.
Red tooth and claw requires
the counterbalance of love in your soul.
Wonder because here is inexplicable beauty
and Adam and Eve must give names
to creatures great and small
in the largest archetypal sense.
You are forever-first humans,
awaking to all these shapes and colors,
life and death, stars and planets,
and the immense weight of being.
No apoprotraic ritual,
demigod hero, or savior
can shed that responsibility for you.
It is an evolved, created gravity. Both things.
And now you are naming robots and super-intelligence,
and your rituals on death and dying as temporary setbacks,
apropos of our fast and furious times.
